Peru: Protesters clash with police in massive anti-government protest in Lima
Thousands of protesters gathered in Lima on Wednesday for a massive anti-government rally, calling for President Dina Boluarte's dismissal, shutting down of the Congress and new elections.
Footage recorded in the capital showed thousands of Peruvian citizens claiming against the newly elected president, and clashing with the police officers guarding the event. Local reports pointed out that thousands of protesters arrived in Lima from Puno, Cusco, Andahuaylas and Ayacucho cities.
Police reported 9,600 agents were deployed in Lima for guaranteeing safety in public and private properties.
According to local media, several Parliament activities were cancelled on Wednesday as demonstrators approached government facilities.
Protests sparked in December 2022, when Dina Boluarte was appointed as the new president by Congress, as her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, was impeached after trying to dissolve the chamber. Castillo was detained, accused of 'rebellion' and 'conspiracy'.
