Germany: Boris Pistorius formally appointed as new defence minister after Lambrecht's resignation
Boris Pistorius, the interior minister of Germany’s Lower Saxony state was formally appointed as Germany's new defence minister during a ceremony in Berlin's presidential palace. Pistorius had been appointed to replace Christine Lambrecht who resigned on Monday after criticism of her performance in the defence ministry.
The new minister received his certificate of appointment from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and is set to take his oath of office in parliament on Thursday.
In December, a number of German-built Puma tanks experienced technical defects during exercises, leading to media and opposition condemnation.
Lambrecht was also mocked for offering to send 5,000 helmets to Kiev, taking her son on a trip in a military helicopter, and giving a New Year’s message about 'war in Europe' during a chaotic fireworks display.
Scholz is expected to appoint her successor quickly, with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in Berlin this week to discuss sending German tanks to Ukraine.
